confessions of a conjuror
I have just finished reading this fantastic book by Derren Brown

It was an absolute pleasure to read this new book by the intelligent and witty Mr Brown.  This phrase is sometimes overused but I literally couldn't put it down.

The book centres around Derren in his days as a magician with a residency (regular performing venue), specifically in his approach and performance to one group of people.  Firstly I think this is a fantastic premise and acts as a voice for most professional magicians, through which he describes perfectly and in great detail the thought processes, emotions, highs and lows of performing for people who haven't visited the venue specifically to see you.  As a professional magician I recognised and empathised with so many of his observations and feelings.

Derren has a way of writing that really sucks you in.  The clever use of his incredible grasp of the English language is not only hilarious, but paints a very clear picture and makes the reader feel like they are there with him.  Funnily enough, I tried reading out a section to a friend and it didn't quite have the same impact.  Perhaps this is because when I read it I can almost hear Derren saying it far better than I ever could.

If you'd like a glimpse into the world of the professional magician this is a must.
